Based in South Wales, Just Lime Ltd specialise in lime plaster and lime mortar conservation projects on heritage and conservation buildings across the country. They are members of the Institute for Historic Building Conservation and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.
Lime rendering protects the exterior of buildings against weathering and erosion. In conservation projects, the render can be finished to match the architectural style of the existing church.
St Illtyd, Gower
A recent restoration project undertaken by Just Lime Ltd was at the church of St Illtyd, Gower. St Illtyd is a 13th century Grade ll* listed church with a 14th century tower, in a remote part of the southern coast of the Gower peninsula.
Paul Walters, Director of Just Lime Ltd, describes the work done at St Illtyd’s:
Our work was to rectify extensive damp problems on the exposed and rather dominant south gable wall. After an extensive amount of cement pointing was removed, alongside cement-based plasters on the same internal aspects, they were replaced with lime mortar and lime putty plasters.
Several sections required consolidation to the stonework as it had been wet for such a long time it was falling apart. The rear gable also received new bath stone coppings and lead work.
Internally, the walls were allowed to dry out as much as possible before any lime putty plaster was applied. During the latter stages, a Bath Stone mullion was repaired using lithomex stone repair, coloured to match the existing.
