The National Churches Trust has confirmed £370,000 funding to help support the repair and modernisation of 23 places of worship in England and Wales.

Places of worship receiving grants include St Mary’s, Sawley, Derbyshire - one of the last survivng ‘tin hut tabernacles’ (pictured left)- and St John the Evangelist, Tolpuddle,  Dorset, where James Hammett, one of the Tolpuddle Martyrs is buried.

Founded in 1953, this year the National Churches Trust, an independent national charity which supports places of worship of all Christian denominations, celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Claire Walker, Chief Executive of the National Churches Trust said:

“We are delighted to be able to help 23 churches and chapels in England and Wales with funding for urgent repairs and modernisation.”

“The United Kingdom’s 47,000 churches, chapels and meeting houses are a unique part of our national story. “

“Since 1953, we have provided over 12,000 grants and loans, worth over £85 million at today’s prices, to keep these fabulous buildings alive.”

“’Our latest grant funding will help ensure that more churches remain in good repair for worship, of benefit to local people and open to visitors wanting to explore their fascinating architecture and history. I would like to thank our donors, Friends and supporters for their continuing generous support which makes our work possible.”
