Helping churches and chapels in England

The National Churches Trust has been supporting churches and chapels in England for many years. Since 2007, we have helped many places of worship  with funding for repairs, maintenance and for the installation of modern facilities. You can see the places of worship we have helped on our interactive map.

As well as awarding grants we help churches and chapels in England in many other ways.

These include:

  • MaintenanceBooker which makes it easy for churches, chapels and historic buildings to access the highest standard of building maintenance services.
  • ExploreChurches a website which lists over 2,500 churches and is a perfect place to showcase churches to visitors and allows them to discover a love for churches and to find out all the information they need to visit them.
  • Ride+Stride for Churches We provide national promotion for the annual Ride+Stride for churches events which raise around £1.3 million each year for historic churches. Working with the National Ride+Stride for Churches Committee, we provide a range of branding and marketing solutions and run the national website to help more people find out about the events.

Projects

We also run projects designed to help make churches sustainable for the future. These include:

Great Interpretations

In 2018-2019 we are working with a group of Lincolnshire’s beautiful churches telling their stories thanks to a £48,800 National Lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Churches are amongst the most important local buildings in every community, containing hidden stories and treasures. Thanks to players of the National Lottery, Great Interpretations will help people across Lincolnshire get to know their churches, record priceless treasures and promote their heritage to audiences far and wide.

36 churches, all part of the Horncastle Churches Festival, are taking part in the Great Interpretations project.

High quality videos and photos are being professionally produced for the churches, and will be accessible on the National Churches Trust’s church tourism website, ExploreChurches.

Training sessions are helping people who care for churches to better promote their buildings, including training on church tourism, interpretation, publicity, photography, film making and more. Online recordings of the training will be available afterwards for other churches to share.

Guided walks and a coach trip will also be offered to show off the beauty of Lincolnshire’s churches to as many people as possible.

Partnerships

The National Churches Trust works with all the major organisations working within the faith heritage sector. We have a longstanding close relationship in particular with local charities, the historic churches trusts, that help churches in many counties and areas of England. Most of these charities are volunteer led and run and many offer essential grants to help churches with a number of issues.

Many also organise an annual Ride+Stride for Churches event on the second Saturday of September. The National Churches Trust supports these charities in a number of ways. To find out more visit our local trusts page.
