The church can be visited during the annual Heritage Weekend in September when tours to the crypt and bell tower are provided. Visitors can request access at other times by contacting the churchwarden.

Built in 1795, St John's is a building of historic interest set in an area of Wakefield in West Yorkshire that was developed in the Georgian era. The church occupies the central position surrounded by St John's Square on three sides. The church has many original Georgian features as well as a significant Gothic style chancel added in 1905.
