An almost perfect specimen of village church architecture in its exterior, and in its interior possibly unsurpassed by anything of its kind in England (Illustrated London News, 1870).
A Grade I Listed Fenland church of cathedral-like proportions with a three aisled nave, clerestory, aisled transepts, crossing tower and large chancel. The earliest parts of the building date from the late 12th century. The village has no post office, shop or pub and two years ago a decision was made to restore and maintain the church as a landmark building which will be open and accessible to all to enjoy the heritage of the building, to worship, as an ideal venue and facility for community activities and events, and to create education and craft skills programmes. The Community Engagement Programme has already organised a Big Clean Up, the church is now open every day and planned events include setting up an Oral History Group. The grant was to help fund urgent works to repair and re-roof the nave and aisle roofs, high-level stonework repair and repairs to rainwater goods.
