The current church of St Mary the Virgin was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, who was probably the foremost church architect of his day and whose other work included the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station, the Albert Memorial, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. The church and its immediate surroundings have a wealth of heritage going back many centuries, the oldest is the motte and bailey to the north of the present church.
