Its imposing Byzantine facade, with two great towers, possibly followed a minor trend in church building started by Westminster Cathedral.
The congregation at the time envisioned 'a great cathedral church towering above the mean streets of West Ham' and dedicated it to local men who were killed in World War I.
The names of 169 of them are cast into the ten memorial chime bells in the east tower.
