Constructed of Pennant sandstone in the Italianate style, this is where 'Cwm Rhondda', an unofficial Welsh national anthem, was first sung on 1 November 1907.

It was composed by local musician John Hughes, who was asked to write a hymn to celebrate the installation of a new pipe organ.
