How to Get
a Grant
Before you complete an application, it is important to make sure your project is eligible by checking that you meet the following criteria:
  1. The building must be open for regular public worship. We do not currently have grants available for cathedrals, but any other Christian places of worship can apply if they meet the eligibility criteria;

  2. It must be sited in England, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Scotland or Wales;

  3. The congregation must belong to a denomination that is a member or associated member of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland;

  4. All projects must be overseen by an architect who is either ARB, RIBA or AABC accredited, or by a chartered surveyor who is RICS accredited.

WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd) The National Churches Trust are pleased to be working with WREN - www.wren.org.uk - to administer a number of grants on their behalf. If your place of worship is sited within a 10 mile radius of a landfill site operated by Waste Recycling Group (WRG Ltd) you may qualify for one of these grants. Please see the application forms and guidance notes for Foundation Grants and Cornerstone Grants available on this page.

If you belong to an Anglican congregation that is planning to build a new church or to enlarge the worship area of an existing church, the Trust may be able to assist with a grant towards the cost through the Incorporated Church Building Society. Please contact the National Churches Trust office by email at grants@nationalchurchestrust.org with basic information on the new building and cost.

Please be aware that the Trust cannot make grants for certain purposes including:
  • Associated buildings (such as church halls and vicarages)
  • Bell repairs
  • Organ repairs
  • Repairs to internal furnishings
  • Redecoration, other than after structural repairs
  • Clock repairs
  • Monument repairs

We must stress that submitting an incomplete application form or failure to include the requested supporting documents will result in a delay to your application, and may result in the application being returned to you.
