St Edmund's church, Castleton, which has its beginnings in Norman times, provides a haven of peace and tranquillity in this busy tourist village.
Castleton, Derbyshire
Originally built as a garrison chapel for the soldiers in Peveril Castle, it has a magnificent Norman chancel arch. Over nearly a thousand years it has witnessed much history and been added to and changed according to the tastes of the time.
The church has an unusual ceiling and some nice stained glass, also a unique ring of bells. Information about the church is on display. The churchyard is large and has interesting gravestones and is also a peaceful place to sit and recharge the spiritual batteries.
Lying in the lee of mysterious Mam Tor, locally known as the 'Shivering Mountain', Castleton is one of the most beautifully situated villages in the White Peak. It is the only place in the world where the semi precious stone Blue John, unique to the Peak District and Derbyshire, can be found.
