Sandwiched between the M25 and the A1M is the comparatively calm oasis of South Mimms (or Mymms) and its medieval flint church.
South Mymms, Hertfordshire
First recorded in 1136, it has a 13th century chancel and a Perpendicular tower and nave. In 1877 the church was restored by GE Street.
The gilded font cover of 1939 is by Sir Ninian Comper. He also designed the glass above the altar in the 15th century Lady Chapel, which was built in 1448 as a private chantry for the Frowyke family who were lords of the manor of South Mimms.
The tomb of Henry Frowyke the younger and the exquisitely carved screen both date from the 1520s. In the chancel, a 13th century grave slab (the oldest), and an exuberant canopied tomb of the mid 16th century (the latest) each commemorate a Henry Frowyke the Elder.

The churchyard has a distinct curve to it perhaps following the shape of an underlying moat and ancient meeting place. An ancient Yew tree reckoned to be between 1,000 and 2,000 years old also stands in the churchyard.
