St Laurence

The history of St Laurence has been bound up with Southwell Minster for almost one thousand years.
The earliest parts of the building date from the 12th century and features of interest are three medieval piscinas, 13th century font, the stiff leaf carving on south aisle capitals, and medieval carving behind the pulpit.
One of the most active incumbents was Samuel Reynolds Hole nationally famous as a rose grower and judge, founder of the National Rose Show (1858) and as author of A Book of Roses (1869). His fame lives on and brings quite a few people from the USA and the Commonwealth to visit Caunton. Son of the local squire, he was vicar of Caunton for 37 years and he is mainly responsible for the appearance of the church as we see it today.
