The National Churches Trust was launched in 2007 as the only national, non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting places of worship used by Christian denominations throughout the UK. The Trust promotes the use of these buildings by congregations and the wider community - underlining their importance to society.
The Trust has been advocating the conservation of places of worship of historic value for the use and enjoyment of future generations since the Trust’s original inception in 1953 as The Historic Churches Preservation Trust. In the 21st Century we remain committed to that aim, but we are also developing in a way that will see us take an increasingly active and innovative role – the Trust’s Work includes:
- Providing an annual grants programme of £1.5M that allocates funds for both building restoration and modernisation
- Encouraging good management practices and regular maintenance by providing advice on access to funding, support and training, and by developing and implementing practical solutions to the needs of the sector
- Encouraging projects that benefit communities, integrate places of worship fully into their local areas and enable buildings to be open to the wider public
- Working to enhance the public and governmental perception of and support for Christian places of worship
The Trust receives no funding from government or church authorities. We rely solely on individual donations (including legacies), parishes, Trusts and Foundations and investment income.
